Literacy
The literacy block includes handwriting, reading, and writing.
READING:
Based on district assessment ( I-Ready) and classroom assessments (observation, running records, checklists, student inventories) young learners will work in small groups to build literacy skills or strategies. In the context of comprehension, instruction will include phonological awareness, phonics, high-frequency words, and vocabulary. We will be utilizing two district wide literacy programs this year to aid in our literacy instruction. The Fountas and Pinnell Classroom program will weave seamlessly into our classroom instruction with the addition of rich interactive read alouds, shared reading opportunities, poetry and reading groups. Our classroom will also be utilizing the Fundations program to aid in the instruction of foundational literacy skills that will lay the groundwork for life-long literacy.
WRITING:
Our young authors will follow the writing process of planning, drafting, revising, proofreading, and publishing. Units of study will include informative, narrative, and persuasive writings. Based on a district assessment and a body of evidence, learning targets will be developed.

MATH
First grade develops the core classroom structures for math that include math talk (increasing academic vocabulary and explaining thinking), quick practice (building skill fluency), student leaders (assuming more learning responsibilities), concept building (acquiring skills and strategies), and community (learning within the context of others). Math lessons support these structures with opportunities for enrichment and extension. Flexible groups may be created based on a body of collected evidence that includes unit-by-unit assessments. Acceleration is only considered if a strong body of evidence (including TAG identification) indicates this would be in the best interest of the learner. TAG teachers will support through enrichment and professional development opportunities.
CORE
Core Knowledge content includes history and science study areas.
ENRICHMENT
Throughout learning content areas, enrichment activities will be provided that will allow students opportunities to expand or develop depth.
